During your procedure, a thin flexible tube was inserted into your artery. This tube, called a sheath, must be removed at the completion of the procedure. When the sheath is removed, an opening is left in your artery. To prevent bleeding, the opening or “puncture site” must be closed.

Conventional Methods

Traditionally, there has been two primary methods to close puncture sites: Manual compression or implanting a vascular closure device. With manual compression, a medical professional applies firm pressure for 15 - 45 minutes to the puncture site. This pressure can be uncomfortable and afterwards requires lying flat in bed for several hours. The second method, a vascular closure  device, may involve leaving sutures, plugs of material, or metal in the puncture site for 30 days, or even permanently. These implants can cause serious problems.
